The History of Pejeng: Bali's Ancient Kingdom Near Ubud

A Village Frozen in Time

The Pejeng Kingdom (13th - 14th Century)

During the late 13th and 14th centuries, the Pejeng Kingdom ruled over central Bali. The most famous king of this era was Dalem Bedaulu (the "Pig-Headed King"). According to legend, he possessed mystical powers but ultimately fell to the expanding Majapahit Empire from Java in 1343.

The Majapahit conquest forever changed Balinese culture, introducing new forms of Hinduism, architecture, and art. However, Pejeng retained its deep, ancient roots, which you can still feel today when walking through the village.

The Moon of Pejeng

The most famous artifact in the village is the Moon of Pejeng (Bulan Pejeng), the largest single-cast bronze kettledrum in the world. Housed high up in the Penataran Sasih Temple, it is believed to be over 2,000 years old, predating the Hindu-Buddhist era of Bali!

Legend says the drum was originally a wheel of the chariot that drove the moon across the sky. One night, it fell to earth and landed in a tree in Pejeng, glowing so brightly that local thieves couldn't steal under the cover of darkness. In frustration, one thief climbed the tree and urinated on it to extinguish the light. The drum exploded, killing the thief, and fell to the ground where it remains today.
