The Truth About Luwak Coffee: How We Source Ethically

The Legend of Kopi Luwak

Kopi Luwak (Luwak Coffee) is famous worldwide for two things: its incredibly smooth, non-bitter taste, and its bizarre production process.

The coffee is made from beans that have been eaten, digested, and excreted by the Asian Palm Civet (the *Luwak*). The enzymes in the civet's digestive tract break down the proteins that give coffee its bitterness, resulting in an exceptionally smooth cup.

Because the traditional process of foraging for these beans on the forest floor is so labor-intensive, Kopi Luwak became the most expensive coffee in the world.

The Problem with Modern Production

Unfortunately, as demand skyrocketed, the industry shifted. Today, a vast majority of the "Kopi Luwak" sold to tourists in Bali comes from caged civets. These animals are often kept in poor conditions and force-fed a diet of only coffee cherries, which leads to malnutrition and distress.

As responsible hosts, we believe that experiencing Bali's agricultural heritage should never come at the expense of animal welfare.

How Umah Kuno Does It Differently

This is why our Luwak Coffee Plantation Experience takes place exclusively at Umah Kuno.

Umah Kuno is a traditional, family-run plantation that refuses to cage civets. Instead, they rely on wild, free-roaming civets that naturally visit their sprawling jungle property at night. The civets are free to roam, eat a varied, natural diet of fruits and insects, and only select the absolute ripest coffee cherries as a snack.

The farmers then forage for the beans in the morning, just as their ancestors did. This produces a vastly superior cup of coffee, and more importantly, allows the wildlife to remain wild.

The Roasting Process

During our experience, you will see exactly how these wild-sourced beans are processed. After being meticulously cleaned and sun-dried, the beans are roasted by hand over an open wood fire in a traditional Balinese kitchen. You'll even have the chance to grab the wooden pestle and help grind the roasted beans yourself!

Taste the Difference

When you sit down on the wooden deck overlooking the jungle ravine with your tasting flight, you can enjoy your Kopi Luwak with a clear conscience. You are supporting ethical farming practices, protecting local wildlife, and tasting coffee exactly the way it was meant to be enjoyed.
