Ubud Travel Guide: How to Escape the Crowds in 2026

If you look up "Ubud" on social media today, you will see beautiful jungle swings, lush rice terraces, and aesthetic cafes. What the pictures *don't* show you is the heavy traffic on Jalan Raya Ubud, the packed sidewalks, and the hour-long waits to get into popular restaurants.

As locals who were born and raised just a few kilometers outside of central Ubud, we love that our home is celebrated globally. However, we also know that many travelers leave feeling a bit overwhelmed by the crowds, missing out on the "slow travel" experience they came looking for.

Here is our local guide on how to truly escape the crowds and experience the authentic, spiritual side of Ubud in 2026.

1. Stay Just Outside the Center (The "15-Minute Rule")

You do not need to book a hotel directly on Monkey Forest Road or Jalan Bisma to enjoy Ubud. In fact, we recommend against it. Look for accommodations in the surrounding villages like Pejeng, Tegallalang (away from the main road), Penestanan, or Nyuh Kuning.

By staying just 10-15 minutes outside the center by scooter or taxi, you wake up to the sounds of roosters and flowing rivers rather than honking cars.

2. Skip the Commercial Mega-Tours

There are dozens of massive tour operators that pack 30+ people into a bus and shuttle them between the biggest tourist traps. Instead, look for micro-tours operated by local families.

For example, instead of renting a bicycle on a crowded main road, you can join our Authentic Pejeng Cycling Tour. We ride through the quiet, ancient village of Pejeng, navigating secret paths through the Subak rice terraces where you won't see another tourist all morning.

3. Visit Temples During "Off-Peak" Hours

If you want to visit famous sites like Tirta Empul or Goa Gajah, timing is everything. Most large tour groups arrive between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

If you arrive right when the gates open (usually around 7:00 AM or 8:00 AM), you will have the temple almost entirely to yourself. The morning light is better for photography, and the temperature is much cooler.

4. Swap the Crowded Cafes for a Village Kitchen

Ubud has incredible world-class restaurants, but if you want to understand the soul of Balinese culture, you need to taste food cooked over a traditional wood fire.

Skip the crowded brunch spots for one day and join a Traditional Balinese Cooking Class. You will learn how to grind spices with a stone mortar, cook authentic dishes, and share a meal with a local family in their home compound.

5. Explore the "Other" Rice Terraces

Tegallalang Rice Terrace is stunning, but it is heavily commercialized with giant swings, zip-lines, and entry fees at every corner.

Bali is covered in rice terraces. You can find equally beautiful, completely empty terraces by just taking a walk around villages like Pejeng or Campuhan. Walk without a destination, smile at the farmers, and you will find the peace you are looking for.
