So you've booked (or you're thinking about booking) a cooking class in Ubud — one of the most rewarding things you can do in Bali. But if it's your first time, you're probably wondering: What actually happens? Do I need any cooking experience? What should I wear? Will there be enough food?

Relax. This guide walks you through every step of a Balinese cooking class, from hotel pickup to the final bite, so you'll arrive knowing exactly what to expect — and ready to enjoy every moment.

Why Take a Cooking Class in Ubud?

Ubud is the cultural and culinary heart of Bali. Surrounded by emerald rice terraces and traditional villages, it's the perfect place to go beyond restaurant menus and learn how Balinese food is really made — with fresh market spices, ancient techniques, and recipes passed down through generations.

A cooking class here isn't just a meal. It's a half-day cultural experience that includes a local market, a rice-field walk, hands-on cooking, and a feast you create yourself. For most travelers, it's the highlight of their trip to Bali.

Do I Need Any Cooking Experience?

Not at all. Our classes are designed for complete beginners and seasoned foodies alike. Your chef guides you step-by-step through every dish, so whether you've never held a chef's knife or you cook every night at home, you'll feel right at home in our kitchen.

Step-by-Step: What Happens at a Tumang Bali Cooking Class

Here's exactly how your day unfolds.

1. Hotel Pickup (30–60 mins)

Your day begins with a comfortable, free shuttle pickup from your hotel. We serve the Ubud area for free, plus Nusa Dua, Kuta, and Sanur. Just meet your driver in the lobby and enjoy the scenic ride to Ubud.

2. The Ubud Morning Market (45 mins)

Your first stop is a traditional Balinese morning market — the kind locals shop at every day. Your guide introduces you to fresh spices, tropical vegetables, and ingredients you've probably never seen before. This is where you'll understand the foundation of Balinese flavor.

3. A Walk Through the Rice Fields (30 mins)

Next, a short and beautiful stroll through green rice paddies. You'll learn how Balinese farmers grow rice — the staple at the center of every meal — before arriving at our kitchen.

4. Hands-On Cooking Class (2 hours)

This is the heart of the experience. At Tumang Balinese Kitchen, you'll enjoy a welcome drink, put on your apron, and cook 4 to 5 traditional Balinese dishes from scratch. You'll chop, grind, mix, and taste your way through authentic recipes, guided by your chef every step of the way.

5. Sit Down and Feast (1 hour)

Finally, the best part: eating everything you've made. Gather around the table with your group, soak in the peaceful views, and enjoy the meal you cooked with your own hands. Then your driver takes you back to your hotel, full and happy.

What Should I Wear and Bring?

Comfortable clothes and walking shoes — you'll be on your feet for the market and rice-field walk. A hat and sunscreen for the outdoor portions. An appetite! You'll be eating a full meal you cooked yourself. Your camera or phone — the rice fields, market, and colorful dishes are wonderfully photogenic. Everything else — aprons, ingredients, recipe book, and tools — is provided.

How Long Does the Class Take?

Plan for around 5 hours total, including transport. We offer three classes daily so you can choose what fits your schedule: Morning Class: 08:30 am – 13:30 pm, Afternoon Class: 14:30 pm – 19:30 pm, Dinner Class: 17:30 pm – 22:30 pm

Will There Be Food I Can Eat? (Dietary Needs)

Balinese cuisine is naturally rich in vegetables, rice, and spices, and we're happy to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary preferences — just let us know when you book so your chef can prepare accordingly.
