Tumang Village, Bali — The Authentic Setting for Our Cooking Class

Tumang is a working village located in Kabupaten Gianyar, approximately 30 minutes north of Ubud centre and 45 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport. It sits between the popular tourist areas of Ubud and the Tegallalang Rice Terraces, making it an ideal base for a Balinese cooking experience that feels far from the tourist trail.

Unlike cooking classes held in commercial kitchens or resort spaces, our kitchen is part of a real Balinese family compound. The morning market tour walks through village stalls and local shops — exactly what residents use every day.

The village setting gives the class its authenticity. You walk through rice paddies and irrigation channels to reach the kitchen. You see Balinese families making offerings, hear temple bells, and eat lunch with a view of the surrounding green terraces. This is the Bali most visitors never experience.

Cooking in a village kitchen — not a purpose-built studio — means the atmosphere is relaxed, the conversations are genuine, and the food tastes exactly as it would in a Balinese home.

We pick you up from your hotel in the Ubud area, then drive you to the village. The morning class begins with a market tour, followed by the rice-field walk to the kitchen. The afternoon class starts directly at the kitchen. In both cases you will cook, eat, and receive a recipe booklet to take home.

The village is accessible year-round, and classes run every day. We recommend booking in advance for the morning session, as it is the most popular option.
